Charlemagne: King Of The Franks
Charlemagne was a brilliant warrior and a strong king who led the Franks in building a huge empire in the 700s AD. He impacted Europe in a big way because he spent most of his time at war leading armies into neighboring kingdoms and conquering them. Charlemagne invaded Saxony in 772 and conquered them. He completed a conversion to Christian in Saxony. He conquered the kingdom of the Lombards in northern Italy. Charlemagne invaded the Moors in northern Spain too. When Charlemagne was finished conquering, the Franks were in control of what is now known as France, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Northern Spain. Charlemagne called his empire the Carolingian Empire.
Google defines a king as "the male ruler of an independent state, especially one who inherits the position by right of birth". Charlemagne fits this description because when his father, Pepin the short, died Charlemagne and his brother Carloman ruled over the Franks. On the other hand Google defines an emperor as "a sovereign ruler of great power and rank, especially one ruling of an empire". Charlemagne conquered many kingdoms in Europe and helped power over the Franks. That is why he was called a King, and an Emperor. Charlemange was also an emperor because in 800 a rebellion against the Pope Leo III occurred and Charlemagne helped defeat the rebellion in Rome. Leo crowned him emperor of Rome.
Upon Charlemagne's death in 814 AD, he appointed successors, people who took over after he died. These successors lacked the vision and creativity that Charlemagne had, and the empire collapsed. Muslim invaders loaded into Northern Italy and Southern France. The Magyars attacked Europe from the East, and destroyed fields and towns. Finally cane the Vikings who raided the loot from Ireland Britain, and other parts of Western Europe.
