The Middle Ages was a period of time that took place in what is now known as Europe. In the Middle Ages there were many different mountain ranges such as the Pyrenees, Alps, and Apennines. These were natural land barriers, but they also kept people trapped. As many people know, during the Ming dynasty of China, the people were isolated and the Westerners took over parts of China because of that. Rivers such as the Rhine, and Tagus were a natural source of transportation and food. These rivers were an easy entrance for invaders such as the Vikings because they could sail their ships up rivers. The many islands that were part of Southern Europe consisted of Sicily, Crete, and Corsica. The advantage to these islands was that they were a place to spread the many people off to. The people in Italy could easily conquer the island of Sicily, and gain territory. The disadvantage to these islands is that the Vikings could use their versatile ships to hop islands and take loot.
