The Dark Ages began at the end of the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire ended because the Visigoths looted burned and pillaged their way through the city. The plundering continued for three days, and for the first time in centuries, the city of Rome was in control by someone other then the Romans. In later years, wave after wave of Germanic barbarian tribes swept through the Roman Empire. Groups such as the Visigoths, Vandals, Angles, Saxons, Franks, Ostrogoth's, and Lombard's took turns ravaging the Empire, eventually carving out areas in which to settle down. In 476 C.E. Romulus, the last of the Roman emperors in the west, was overthrown by the Germanic leader Odoacer, who became the first Barbarian to rule in Rome.
The fall of Rome impacted Europe in many ways. First of all culture was spread vigorously. Also religion and new ideas. Many political leaders were heard of too.
